Quest Overview

A Fortunate Gesture is a Side Quest in Sands of Aura. Side quest are optional and do not alter the primary ending of the game. Some side quests are dependent upon other quests to begin or may only become available once the main narrative of the game has been progressed to a specific point. Note: A Fortunate is the pivotal point for Danthea’s character arc. If it is not completed before a major plot event (entering the city of Ishular) the quest will fail and the character involved will progress along a different path.

"After an odd pairing of vessels drew Felker’s eye to the Colossus of Radiance, he recommended you proceed with caution as the presence of both Freebooter and Church vessels suggests a potential conflict.”

Part One

Upon arriving at the Colossus of Radiance, Felker will mention that there are vessels belonging both the Church and to Freebooters at the dock to the Colossus of Radiance and warns about the bloodshed such a scene could suggest. He suggests you progress with caution as you explore. Progressing up the wooden scaffolding, you’ll be able to go right or left. Progressing to the left will bring you into combat with a number of enemies and onto a platform where you can either follow the natural progression straight or follow a mine-cart track down into the lower level opposite where you docked initial. Should you ignore the track and follow main path, the wooden scaffolding will wrap up around until you come to a wounded Freebooter hanging for the scaffolding. Should you react quickly and pull them up, they will tell you with their final breath that someone called the Staffmaster was hung with something. You can then follow the natural path of the scaffolding as it leads you up the colossal pinky finger. Once you’ve made it beyond the pinky finger, you can progress onto another larger wooden platform where you’ll face a number of crazed freebooters. On this first platform if you look to the left you’ll see a portion of exposed beams above which a corpse is hung. Approaching the corpse and interacting will grant you the Staffmaster’s Key. With this key in hand, you can progress forward, down some stairs until you come to another Resonate Bell adjacent a weathered flag. From this Bell you have a number of options to explore but progressing over the back of the hand, toward more scaffolding will allow you to climb higher. Progressing up a staircase which wraps around itself behind the colossal index finger, will eventually bring you to a locked gate beside an elevator. Here you can activate the elevator and use the Staffmaster’s Key to unlock the gate. Proceeding through the gate and climbing a ladder will eventually bring you to the top of the colossal index finger where you will find Danthea surrounded by slaughtered Freeboots and executed members of the church. Before you can figure out what is going on, Danthea, blaming you for her fall from grace, brings you into combat. Once she’s been defeated she explains to you that Church betrayed her due to her proximity to a secret revealed by Calder. She beckons you to take whatever you wish from a nearby chest of supplies that were intended to be used on a return journey. Doing so will grant you the Dial of Orsana. Inspecting the Dial of Orsana item will reveal a slip of parchment inside that directs it’s holders to use the Dail at each finger of the Colossus to unseal some secret.

Part Two

Heeding the instruction of the dial, you can return to exploring the Colossus of Radiance. Upon the ends of each finger is an indention carved into the stone, its shape matches that of the Dial. Using the dial at each finger will unseal a secret tomb within the center of the hand, but this must be done in a particular order. Strewn throughout the level are the Diary Fragments of a scribe who took part in Danthea and the Church’s expedition, who discovered the sequence matched the journey of the prophet Atnael through a series of gates in the divine realm. To unseal the tomb the fingers must be interacted with in this order: Index, Pinky, Middle, Ring, and Thumb. Once the tomb has been unlocked, you may proceed from the Resonate Bell mentioned earlier and follow a ramp which runs downward toward the palm. There a secret tomb is now opened and when interacting with it, will reveal a corpse mangled by eons. It grants you the Parting Missive quest item and the Betrayer’s Armor set. Returning with the Parting Missive to Danthea at top of the index finger, will reveal that the expedition by the Church was to destroy evidence against their prophet Atnael. Danthea takes it from you believing that with it she can restore her name and be welcomed back into the graces of the church. She thanks you for rekindling her spirit and after conversation with her the “A Fortunate Gesture” quest will complete.
